 | NewsBrucella in pigsNovember 18, 2009 Wildlife as a risk for spreading the disease into domestic pigs European Food Safety Agency, EFSA, has identified a risk for Brucella suis being introduced and spread into domestic pigs, through contact with wildlife and subsequent spread within the EU by trade. The presence of infected wild boars and hares in areas of outdoor pig production is the most important risk factor in currently affected areas in Europe. Movement of live pigs and semen from these areas could spread the disease to other parts of Europe.
There is currently no requirement for monitoring and surveillance of B. suis in domestic pigs or in wild life. The occurrence of the disease is mainly sporadic. Within the EU, the epidemiological situation is varied, some countries are free, others report sporadic outbreaks and yet others report this disease as an emergent problem. Serological testing using I or C ELISA has been mentioned as a suitable method for monitoring. Source: http://www.efsa.europa.eu/EFSA/efsa_locale-1178620753812_1211902618690.htm
